Deadline for all units 14/06/2013 / Half-Term Homework

Deadline for all units 14/06/2013 / Half-Term Homework
As stated in Friday’s lesson, the following work should be completed and handed in via your ‘hand in’ folder before Friday 14th of June.
Unit 1 – ALL feedback amends must be completed and your blog must have been regularly updated
Unit 2 – Computer Systems
Task 1: Hardware Components
·         P1 - You should have created a word document describing the functions of different hardware components (e.g. motherboard, RAM, Graphics card).
·         P5 – You should have created a video that demonstrates how to install at least two hardware components (This will need to be completed after school if you were absent during filming).
Task 2: Operating Systems
·         P2/M1 – You should have completed the Task 2 document on Pupil Public by describing what an operating system is, comparing the most commonly used operating system and making recommendations to ITK.
 Task 3: Software Utilities
·         P3/D1 – I asked you to create a newsletter in Miss Honeybone’s lessons that explains the purpose of different software utilities (virus protection, firewalls, clean –up tools, drive formatting). To achieve the DISTINCTION criteria you had to clearly explain how each utility can improve the performance of a computer system.
Task 4: Recommend a computer system
·         P4/M2 – You were asked to create a word document that recommends a computer system for two sets of people working at ITK:

>Standard staff that use Microsoft Office and E-Mail
>Graphic Designers that need to create/edit imagery and media

To achieve the MERIT criteria, you needed to clearly justify each of your decisions.
Task 5: Installing hardware/software and testing functionality
·         P5 – You should have created an interactive slideshow that shows the steps that need to be followed when installing Windows XP (screenshots on P:Drive)
·         P6 – Most of you should have evidenced the steps that you have taken to install a graphics tablet on our test system. You should have also shown the steps that you have taken to install the graphic tablet drivers/design software (Artweaver). This can either take the form of a PowerPoint or word document (If you haven’t completed the task then we will do it next lesson).
·         P7 – You will need to evidence testing the configurations of our new system. Only one group has completed this task, the rest will need to complete the testing next lesson. Create a testing table to house the information (once completed).
·         P8 – You must demonstrate routine performing routine maintenance tasks on a computer and evidence this using photographs, video or screenshots. You must evidence the following and then add it to your website (consider interactive slideshow for photographs/screenshots):
Virus scan of memory and your hard disk
Taking backup of changed data files
Clean mouse and keyboard check for sticky keys
Clean monitor screen
Disk clean-up (delete temporary files)
Defragment hard disk
Clean outside of case
Take complete backup of data files
Keep written record of hardware and software configuration
NOTE>> you can performance these tasks on your home computer
·         M3/D2 – You should have evaluated the specification of our newly built computer (specification on PupilPublic) and created a table explaining possible improvements. The table musts clearly justify your choices.

Unit 28 – Website Production
Task 1 – Web Architecture:
·         P1/M1/D1 – I asked you to create a leaflet/newsletter that covered each of the following three topics (PowerPoint help sheet available on P:Drive).
Part 1 – Outline the web architecture and components that will enable Internet and web functionality for them.

Part 2 – Explain the role of web architecture in website communication

Part 3 – Explain the role of the TCP/IP protocol and how it links to application layer protocols

Task 2: User side/ server side factors and security risks (HOMEWORK)
P2/P3 - Internet usage at the ITK offices has increased dramatically since the new system was installed. You have decided to create a newsletter that will advise staff of the factors that can influence the performance of a website and explain the security risks and protection mechanisms involved in website performance. Your newsletter should consist of at least four pages (not including front cover) and include:
Part 1 – descriptions of the user side and server side factors that influence the performance of a website (at least two pages)
Part 2- descriptions of security risks and protection mechanisms involved in website performance (at least two pages)
Help for both topics can be found:
Part 2 – Research Viruses, Hacking, ID theft, Firewall and explain each one

  1. I'm having problems with some of the work that was set. I can't do the newsletter Task 2 because i don't have the right software to complete it and i'm a bit confused with task 5 P7/P8.
